My classroom has drawn positive comments from teachers, students, and parents alike. As you enter, you notice brightly colored posters, displays of student work, and messages about appropriate behaviors (Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be the Best, Expect the Best.

I spend time and thought planning and arranging my classroom layout. It is a physical space that shows my personality, my attitude, and makes me feel positive.

The room conveys a positive message:
"You're coming into a space where the teacher is enthusiastic about learning and teaching, all achievements are valued, and everyone is actively engaged in learning."

The classroom is just a part of the atmosphere I create for my students. I give them order, routine, responsibility, and an opportunity to succeed.
  • I post weekly classroom responsibilities, a daily agenda, and homework assignments.
  • I greet each student by name.
  • Each day, students follow the same routine.  They:
    • record their homework,
    • begin a "warm-up"
    • do assigned classroom jobs,
    • read the day's agenda and objectives out loud, and
    • prepare to learn.

It is vital to transform the world by changing the way people treat each other, and by modeling that kind of changed behavior ourselves.

Artifact: Classroom Expectations poster

At the beginning of the school year, I discuss acceptable and appropriate classroom behavior.  I encourage students to suggest additional standards for our room. Colorful displays of each standard are posted around the room.  I review these expectations with parents at :Back to School night.

Artifact: Classroom Job Chart

Classroom assignments give my students a chance to experience responsibility, leadership, and social interaction.  Jobs are assigned each week on a rotating basis. These are: facilitator (records attendance), dispenser, collector, wordsmith (looks up words as needed), memory (records agenda and homework), courier (picks up and delivers material outside the classroom), stampologist (assists teacher in stamping student planners), and understudy (fills in for any absent student.)
