The new curriculum for 6th grade English challenges students at all levels of ability.  At the same time, it challenges every teacher to design and deliver instruction that addresses a wide variety of curriculum goals.

I post mastery objectives taken from the MCPS curriculum and a step-by-step agenda on the board each day.  Students read the information aloud and we discuss any questions that arise.
 
Modifications in activities and assessments suggested in the curriculum are necessary for all classes. I pay attention to each student's individual abilities and interests. The results of student performance, including MSA scores and MAP-R results, and pre-assessments (included in the curriculum) inform my lesson planning.

Artifacts: Instructions for Anne Frank "Body Biography" project and assessment.

One of the mastery objectives in the 7th grade English unit I taught during my internship was to "demonstrate an understanding of character traits." I designed a series of activities where the students studied the meaning of a variety of traits; described Anne Frank's character during Acts I and II of the play; and identified changes in Anne from Act I to Act II.
 
As a culminating activity, students demonstrated mastery of these concepts in a "body biography" of Anne where they showed Act I and Act II character traits on different sides of a figure.
