Standard I: Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

Artifact: 7th Grade Information Card

Early in the school year, Roberto Clemente Middle School holds a "Back to School Night." This interaction between teachers and parents/guardians of 7th grade students is especially important because it addresses issues associated with a transition to 7th grade.  I distribute this "information card/survey" along with a syllabus and labels including my phone number and e-mail.

Artifact: Good News Card

During my internship in 2003-4, I began distributing "good news" cards to students who had a good day, a good week, or just did something worth noting.  In the time I spent observing classrooms around the county I saw students receive detention, referral, or suspension notices.  Along with stickers, these cards help to counteract the regular diet of negative feedback.

I teach seventh grade English classes in which students have widely varied abilities. Of my four English classes, one includes "advanced" (AD) students and three are "inclusion classes."  My students with IEPs or 504 plans have disabilities ranging from physical limitations to severe attention and perceptual problems.  I use differentiated instructional strategies, assignments, and assessments.  In addition, I give students opportunities for individual assistance.  Most important, I plan and present lessons that are challenging and that let students know that I know they can learn and that I support them as they learn.
